Bridging the Digital Divide and Empowering Communities in Beaumont Leys

Peter Smith, now honoured with an MBE, has dedicated his career to education and community development

The Founder of The Cooke E-Learning Foundation, is receiving an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to education and to the community in Beaumont Leys, Leicester.

After teaching in schools in London and Essex, Peter moved to Leicester to further his career. While working as deputy principal at Babington Community College, he founded The Cooke eLearning Foundation in 2005.

The initial aim was to provide computers to families to help bridge the digital divide. Many were frustrated because they couldn't support their children's learning without computer knowledge, particularly those with limited English skills. In response, the charity secured funding to provide language learning software for home use, supported by the expertise of charity staff.

From these small beginnings, the charity evolved, recycling donated computers to expand its services. Today, trading as E2, the charity has continued to grow, necessitating a move to larger premises. They have received substantial funding to completely refurbish their new location at Home Farm, Beaumont Leys. E2 offers a range of educational and community-related services for young people and adults, as well as a scheme to support pupils from local schools by providing basic skills and accredited courses.

Thanks to grants from various sources, including the National Lottery, E2 offers numerous activities for the Beaumont Leys community. These include a weekly food pantry, sporting and creative activities for children and young people, school holiday clubs, and a recently established Urban Garden Project. All of this has been achieved through the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers. Peter extends his thanks to everyone who has helped to make the charity such a success.
