We have been funded by Affinity Sutton since 2013 to engage with residents from their Belgrave estate,

which is close to our main training centre in this part of Leicester. We have used the funding to encourage people to learn how to use computers and go online to discover how they could use the internet to help them find employment, lead healthier lives, find out about ways to avoid the risks of diabetes and heart disease. We also introduced them to many of the other activities our centre offers to inspire them to take up new interests, build confidence and meet new people. Unemployed residents were encouraged to come along to our Work Club and access support to help them find work. To help us achieve our aims we identified and trained some residents as Learning Champions to support the sessions and eventually join Affinity Sutton’s Get Connected network of volunteer Digital Champions. We have been working closely with their Neighbourhood Investment Officer and the local Housing Officers as well as other key regional and central staff to plan additional activities.
Many residents are Asian with ESOL needs and have appreciated the information we provide in their own language about diabetes and heart disease. We have organised additional activities at local venues, which were appreciated by residents and helped to strengthen community understanding amongst the different cultural groups on the estate.
