Our recent, very successful 'English My Way' project was funded by the Good Things Foundation, as part of a consortium with BBC Learning English and British Council, to develop a new innovative approach to English language learning (ESOL). The programme was funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government through the Community-based English language competition. Our charity worked with adults from the Asian community who had little, or no, levels of English. We supported them to improve their language skills and build their confidence in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, to allow them to better integrate within society.
Since the group consisted entirely of women Bhavna, our tutor, delivered some sessions looking at specific health problems, touching on topics that were often ignored or kept quiet by women due to cultural stigmas and introducing appropriate words, applying them to real-life scenarios of going to the doctors or hospital to talk about health concerns.
